Gelsenkirchen - The versatile Ruhr metropolis
Gelsenkirchen is known nationwide as the home of football club FC Schalke 04. But the city in the middle of the Ruhr area has much more to offer than just football. Although the history of the city is comparatively short, Gelsenkirchen had managed within a few decades to become one of the most important industrial sites in Europe as a city of 1000 fires. The Ruhr metropolis received the name city of the 1000 fires in the time of the many coking plants located there. Unfortunatly, this is no longer the case, and Gelsenkrichen has a very different reputation in the region.
The city with around 260,000 inhabitants is an attractive place to live, not least because Gelsenkirchen is one of only five digital model cities in North Rhine-Westphalia. In Gelsenkirchen, for example, there is also the largest free WiFi mile of the whole Ruhr area. The city offers numerous family-friendly events and training opportunities. The city has been honored in many areas for its high quality of life. It is particularly popular because of it’s support in the area of sports, sustainability, creativity and friendly attittude towards senior citizens.
Gelsenkirchen is often referred to as a blue city, not only because royal blue is the club color of Schalke 04, but also because the G in the city logo is ultramarine, as well as the sponge relief of the artist Yves Klein in the music theater in the district or the pumping station on the former site of the Nordstern colliery. You cannot miss this color in the whole of the city.
Gelsenkirchen’s cultural offer is diverse. In addition to several theaters and rock festivals, the jazz events inspire large audiences. The many museums in the city, sometimes in collieries, sometimes in castles like the Horst Castle, attract many people from the area. Horst Castle has a restaurant with Italian cuisine and historic building. Here special events are regular making this an ideal location for meetings, private events and weddings.
Schloss Berge in Gelsenkirchen Buer is a good hotel with very nice surroundings and a very good restaurant, in-house catering and rooms for banquets and meetings of all kinds. This location, with it‘s very special atmosphere, is very popular for weddings and wedding celebrations.
ZOOM Erlebniswelt is also worth a visit, as are the many green parks in the city. Whether it's a trip to the Middle Ages or exploring the digital future, both are possible in Gelsenkirchen. The whole thing can be wonderfully combined with a visit to Schalke, because the traditional club is one of Gelsenkirchen's most important trademarks.
