FC Schalke 04
The FC Schalke 04 and it‘s greatest successes
FC Schalke 04 was founded on May 4, 1904 in the district of Gelsenkirchen Schalke and is today one of the most successful clubs in German football. The team, which traditionally come in royal blue jerseys, have won a total of seven German championships, have won the DFB Cup five times and also won the 1997 UEFA Cup.
Schalke 04 became German champion in 1958, so the fans of the "Knappen" have been waiting for more than a century for a success in the Bundesliga. The biggest success of the club's history was winning the UEFA Cup. The final, which at that time still consisted of a first and second leg, was won by the Gelsenkirchen "Eurofighter" against Inter Milan. After both teams won their home games 1-0, it came to the showdown on penalties, in which the Royal Blues had the better nerves: While all Schalke scorers scored a goal with their penalties, the Italian team failed twice at scoring past the then Schalker goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.
Schalke’s last success in the DFB Cup dates back to 2011, in which FC Schalke 04 triumphed clearly 5-0 against MSV Duisburg.
FC Schalke 04 and it‘s greatest successes
Schalke had, until 2001, played their home games in the Park Stadium, which initially offered space for 70,000 spectators, after a conversion, however, it had only a capacity of 62,000 people. Shortly after the turn of the millennium, the modern "Arena Auf Schalke" was inaugurated. The multi-purpose arena, which has an optional roof, provides space for 62,000 spectators. At national games, and at international meetings, standing is not allowed and still prohibits around 7,000 fewer people from entering the arena. Since meeting UEFA's standards in 2005, it has been officially known as the "Veltins Arena", and put it in the highest category of stadiums, allowing the arena to host international finals, thus in 2004, the Champions League final took place between AS Monaco and FC Porto.
Schalke’s stadium also houses a club museum and has been the location for concerts by such internationally famous bands as Metallica, Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen among numerous others.
